YieldGardŽ Corn Borer corn hybrids produce an insecticidal protein derived from the bacterium Bacillus Thuringienses. These hybrids provide protection against the European corn borer equal to, and usually far greater than, optimally timed, costly insecticides.
There are also indirect benefits to planting YGCB hybrids such as lowering the borer population in an area. If, for example 50% of the corn acres are planted to YGCB, then the Corn Borer population could be reduced significantly. Also fewer dropped ears will mean less volunteer corn in next year's crop, better grain quality because of less insect damage, and a management alternative to chemical insecticide application with fewer environmental and safety concerns. 20% refuge is required. |
